La Période italienne

After the exhibition at the Musée des Beaux-Arts of Nantes called Simon Vouet ou l’éloquence sensible - Dessins from the Staatsbibliothek of Munich (5 December 2002 - 20 February 2003) which showed drawings from his French period, we are presenting the other half diptych, so to speak, namely Simon Vouet - tha Italian years.

Following the pioneering exhibition, Valentin et les caravagesques français (Grand Palais, 1974) organized by Jean-Pierre Cuzin and Arnauld Brejon de Lavergnée, and the formidable retrspective Simon Vouet (Grand Palais, 1990-1991) by Jacques Thuillier, the aim here is to develop and give an overview of our knowledge of this fundamental period in the history of French and Italian painting. We shall also be looking the work of Vouet’s close friends and family in Rome: his wife, Virginia da Vezzi, his brother Aubin, Charles Mellin, and the talented engraver, Claude Mellan, who made his compositions better known. Vouet accepted commissions in Rome, Genoa, Naples and Venice. He drew on these difference inspirations but his art influenced his Italian colleagues in turn, including the famous Artemisia Gentileschi.

Overall direction of the exhibition has undertaken by Blandine Chavanne (Nantes) and Emmanuel Guigon (Besançon). The research for it has been entrusted to Dominique Jacquot, curator at the Musée des Beaux-Arts of Strasbourg, who is curently preparing a catalogue of all of Vouet's paintings, and Adeline Collange, curator of Old Master Paintings at the Musée des Beaux Arts of Nantes.  A catalogue has been published for the occasion, including several essays about the latest discoveries on Vouet's Italian period.

This exhibition, prepared in collaboration with the Musée des Beaux-Arts of Besançon (27th March – 30th June 2009), have received the “Label d’intérêt National” from the Ministère de la Culture et de la Communication/Direction des musées de France which are supporting it.
